Student Learning

We are committed to provide all students with learning opportunities and experiences that they individually require, through delivering a comprehensive broad based curriculum based on the AusVELS national curriculum framework.

English
The study of English helps create confident communicators, imaginative, thinkers and informed citizens. It is through these studies that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around them.
Our English program consists of:
  • The Foundation Program -prep to grade two.
  • Level 3-6 program.
  • Individual Learning Plans to develop and extend student learning.
  • Home Reading program prep to grade six.
  • Extensive assessment and continuous evaluation focusing on individual progress and needs.
 
English as a Second Language
The English as a Second Language Program supports the classroom program and is designed to extend and develop the students understanding and use of the English language.

Mathematics
The Numeracy Program provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. It develops student capabilities that our students need in their personal, work and civic life and provides the basics on which the applications of mathematics are built.
Our program covers
  • The Foundation Program -prep to grade two
  • Level 3-6 Program
  • Maths Additional Assistance Program
  • Individual Learning Plans to develop and extend student learning.
  • Extensive assessment and continuous evaluation focusing on individual progress and needs.

Inquiry Learning
As part of our Inquiry Learning Program students are engaged in a broad range of topics including awareness and appreciation of different cultures, history and health, current affairs, natural and social environments, biological, chemical and physical science and technology, encouraging investigation, design, production and evaluation.
Inquiry learning units are planned across the year and cover the AusVELS domains of Science, Humanities, Technology, Civics and Citizenship.

Arts- Performing Arts and Visual Arts
At Elmhurst Primary School we have a commitment to providing an Arts Programs which nurture enjoyment and develop skills and knowledge of Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama. These programs foster creativity and develop talent and special abilities of students.
The Art Specialist Programs involve:
  • Lessons in Visual Arts and Preforming Arts (music, dance and drama)
  • Performance at the annual end of year concert
  • Visits from music and drama groups
  • Workshops by visiting artists
 
Physical Education and Health
The Physical Education Program encourages the development of fundamental motor skills and also assists with the development of skills required for sport and general fitness. Our Health Program incorporates topics for teaching such as:
  • Food and nutrition
  • Human development and human relations

Languages Other Than English
We have a commitment to provide, for all students, the opportunity to learn a language other than English. We offer Japanese via video conferencing once a week with follow-up lessons face to face on three Cluster days per term.
Through our Languages Other Than English Program we promote and celebrate cultural diversity.

E-learning and ICT
We aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate safely in our fast growing technological world
  • Students in years prep to six are provided with opportunities to develop their skills in becoming active and independent learners as well as competent and discriminate users of a wide range of technologies that support their learning.
  • The classrooms are equipped with computers and other electronic devices such as interactive white boards. Students use a variety of multimedia software programs, Internet and esmart.
